Philippine Coconut Water Or Buko Juice For Exporting

Coconut water

Last May, I visited Thailand for a business meeting with a few of my friends. As we were strolling around the streets of Pattaya and Bangkok I noticed a very familiar drink that was also found in the streets of Manila. It was the healthy coconut juice or “Buko juice” as we call it here in the Philippines. Being exhausted after walking several kilometers to find outlet stores in Bangkok, it was very refreshing to have a drink of their local coconut juice. I noticed that their coconuts were a bit smaller compared to what we have in the Philippines. The taste was also different because the Thailand Buko was a lot sweeter. Ours is a lot thicker and had a milky taste but definitely not that sweet. It also costs much more compared to the price of Buko in the Philippines. One small coconut in Thailand costs around 30 Baht or about 39 Pesos. Here in Manila we can still buy Buko for 20-25 Pesos. After my vacation in Thailand as I was checking my email, I stumbled upon this article posted in the Yahoo Philippines news.

According to PCA the Americans bought $3.9 million worth of coconut water in the first quarter of 2012 alone. Their consumption increased more than four times compared to the previous year. PCA has also stated that demand for coconut juice has been increasing in other countries like Netherlands and Australia. International demand for coconut water is increasing as people are getting more health conscious. Drinking coconut water benefits our health by strengthening our body, reducing fatigue and taking care of our normal heart function.

According to the PCA more than 3 million hectares of land in the Philippines is dedicated for growing buko or coconuts. The Philippines is also estimated to be able to produce 15 billion coconuts per year.

Coconut water business

Now talking business, I was able to find a high quality coconut-water manufacturer during this year’s International Food Expo in SMX. I’m still continuously looking for different manufacturers of coco water and other coconut by-products.
